“Whatty”, as he is known at home, ran 23 times under Rules and had 19 point-to-point starts. He posted eight wins and 17 other top three placings, often ridden by Sarah’s son Tommy. He still lives at Sarah’s yard, which is local to Hannah in Reading.
“Sarah asked me to ride him at the beginning of last year, but he only went to three shows, including HOYS where he was a bit awestruck,” said Hannah. “This is his first proper season showing and he won recently at the New Forest.”
Allister Hood claimed the second ticket with Zoe Turner’s five-year-old Gateshead (Dennis). In contrast to the winner, this Juddmonte-bred First Defence gelding only ran once, proving only that he “wasn’t cut out for racing”, according to Allister. “Dennis had been in training as a two and three-year-old, but even though he’s fantastically well bred, he’s just too slow,” he said. “He was gelded last spring, then had the summer off and we started working with him last October.
