Adults and children may enter and ride ponies in this class as long as their weight and size is appropriate, decision of the judge is final on the suitability of horse and rider. Unsuitable combinations will be eliminated. Class judged on 50% conformation, temperament, type and manners and 50% performance. Judges will ensure that conformation and temperament will allow the pony to be a competent all round performer, capable of doing most work including jumping and dressage. Harmony of pony and rider will be taken into account. Jumping style and approach is important and the judges will not ride. The same bridle must be worn throughout and snaffle bridles will not be penalised, no gags, martingales are optional. 1st will qualify at Judge’s discretion.

Hack – show jacket. The best of type will win. 1st and 2nd qualify at judges discretion. At HOYS, championship rosettes will be awarded to both a riding horse and a hack (subject to horses forward to Horse of the Year Show) and they will both qualify for the final championship at the judge’s discretion.

Horses 5 years or over. No stallions. Open to horses and ponies registered as a traditional gypsy cob within the TGCA stud book. Part-breds not eligible. Owners and riders do not have to be a member of the TGCA but horses have to be registered in the TGCA traditional gypsy cob stud book.

Traditionals will not be ridden by the judge or the judge‘s representative, but will give a show. The traditional gypsy cob should be a strong, sturdy and powerful cob coupled with an abundance of luxuriant flowing mane, forelock, tail, and leg hair known as feather.

£500 prize for the winner. Open to any horse or pony 16 years of age or over. Riders 10 years of age or over on the date of the YHL championship. No restrictions other than age of horse, pony or rider. Will be asked to extend and must be able to canter together as one class. The horse or pony will not be ridden by the judge and the competitor will be expected to give a show. Horses may be ridden side saddle.

1st and 2nd placed will qualify at judges discretion at each venue.

10 will qualify for Your Horse Live in 2023 with a chance to win the £500 Championship prize.

Riders, owners and handlers must meet the SFAS amateur criteria. Pony must be 128cms or under and meet the Search for a Star Amateur criteria. Snaffle bridles only. Pony must be over 4 years old.

Lead rein must be attached to the noseband and not the bit and the child should be able to rise to the trot. Judged on conformation, way of going and temperament to be able to take part in Pony Club activities with a young child, pony will not be stripped but will give a show. Lungeing will be allowed if the venue permits, but the pony must only be ridden by the competitor. Handlers of the lead rein pony should be suitably dressed with a hat and suitable footwear, ponies to be plaited unless they are registered mountain and moorland, traditional or native types. Horses and ponies that have been placed in the Pretty Polly Championships at RIHS are eligible to compete in the Pony Club Search for a Star Pony Club classes.

Lungeing will be allowed, if the venue permits, but the pony must only be ridden by the competitor. Ponies to be plaited unless they are registered mountain and moorland, native or traditional types. Horses and ponies that have been placed in the Pretty Polly Championships at RIHS are eligible to compete in the Pony Club Search for a Star Pony Club classes.

The animal should be an athletic type capable of doing all round Pony Club activities. The class will be judged on conformation, way of going and temperament. The horse or pony will not be ridden by the judge but the competitor will be asked to give a set show. Open to any type of horse or pony that is athletic enough to be an all-rounder but correct enough to be a show horse.

Horses and ponies that have been placed in the Pretty Polly Championships at RIHS are eligible to compete in the Pony Club Search for a Star Pony Club classes.

Handler and horse may have competed at HOYS but ONLY in the Search for a Star series, the rest of the amateur rules stand. Horses or ponies that have been placed in the SSDL Championship at RIHS are eligible to compete in the Veteran in-hand Search for a Star class. Horses must be shown in a bridle with a bit.

Open to any heavy draught horse, must be purebred registered in their relevant breed stud book.

Handler must be 14 years of age or over on the date of the YHL championship. The horse must be 4 years of age or over to be exhibited in a bridle with a bit. No halters will be accepted.

Correct turnout for a heavy horse is expected. Presentation for breed standard in the show ring. Handlers to be dressed appropriately. Suggested clothing: tweed jacket, shirt and tie, smart trousers, appropriate footwear no trainers. Hard hat compulsory for handler and groom if in the ring.

Search for a Star is going back to its roots and once again running a showing master class at two of the venues this year. Instead of travelling for just one days show why not make a weekend of it, meet the other competitors and learn while you are there?

Competitors competing in SEIB Search for a Star or SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse on the following day will have priority to take part, but spectators are welcome who will be invited to make a donation for charity. The SEIB team will provide help and advice on how to show your horse or pony, They will help you to choose the best class and show you how to improve the overall picture. They will work on your way of going, turnout, trot up and share their showing secrets.

Some questions that we will answer:
Do you know if you are in the right class? Is there anything you can do to make your horse or pony stand out? How do you teach your horse or pony to stand up for the judge and trot up properly? Do you want to learn more about tack and turn-out? Do you need help with your horse of pony’s way of going? Should you clip or not? What does a super plait look like and how do you do it? Should you pull or plait a tail and what is the best length for it to be? What should you wear?
