The penultimate qualifier for the 2021 SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse championship is to be held in the main arena at the NAF Five Star Hartpury International Horse Trials in Gloucestershire on Saturday 14th August 2021. The qualifier gives the opportunity for two horses to qualify for the prestigious SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse championship at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS).

The SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse HOYS championship was set up by SEIB back in 1998. The series was created to give ex-racehorses the chance of a second career and to show their versatility at a time when many had little purpose once their racing days had finished. Now in its 23rd year, the series – and popularity of ex-racehorses – is going from strength to strength.

At Hartpury on the 14th August, up to 25 thoroughbred ex-racehorses will come forward for the chance to qualify for HOYS. If the first two horses already have their HOYS place the qualification will go down the line. The qualifier will be judged by David Ingle (ride) and Ann Hooley (conformation). The class is open to thoroughbreds that have raced on the Flat, in National Hunt races or in Point to Points.

SEIB Marketing Manager Nicolina MacKenzie said: “We are very grateful to Hartpury for holding our qualifier. It will be interesting to see if we get a few eventers entering our class to see if they can manage to earn a ticket to HOYS with their ex-racehorses.”

There are six national qualifying classes for the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse HOYS championship with a total of twelve ex-racehorses horses going through to the finals.

The HOYS Champion in the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse class will go forward to the HOYS Supreme Championship. This opportunity reflects the competitiveness of this class and that the ex-racehorses are taken seriously as show horses. Several past Racehorse to Riding Horse Champions have gone on to compete with great success in open showing classes.
