Sadly, our horses don’t stay young forever and – much like us – as they age they become prone to certain conditions and injuries. This is why it’s so important to make sure you have the right veteran horse insurance (also known as mature horse insurance and retired horse insurance) in place. At SEIB, our team own and ride horses aged from four all the way up to their late twenties, so we understand the need to have the best veteran horse insurance policy you can find. Our older horse insurance is tailored to provide your horse with the cover they need.
Specialist Veteran Horse Insurance
Veteran horse insurance is available for horses from 15 years old with no upper age limit. It’s provided as a package policy which covers accidental external injuries only. Cover highlights include:
- Vet Fees – up to £3,000 for any one claim (accidental external injury only)
- Death/Theft/straying of the horse
- Public Liability
- Personal Accident & Dental treatment
- Tack & Saddlery insurance
- ‘Farewell Cover’ (dependent on insurer), which provides a contribution towards disposal costs, even if there’s no successful mortality claim.
- Colic Surgery option – we can also offer veteran horse insurance with colic surgery cover. This is an add-on that includes a contribution to emergency life-saving colic surgery up to £1,500 (subject to underwriters’ agreement and an excess).

All of our veteran horse and pony insurance policies come with public liability cover as standard. Public liability cover is not a legal requirement, however, it will protect you if an incident occurs with your horse that results in an injury to a third party or causes third party property damage.
Accidents can happen at any time and injuries can be expensive to treat. The majority of our Veteran Horse Insurance claims are injuries sustained in the field which, as we all know, can happen at any time. Our Veteran Horse Insurance provides peace of mind that – should your horse sustain a wound whilst out in the field – you’re covered to receive a contribution towards the costs of veterinary fees.
Colic accounts for a large number of equine veterinary call outs and is a major cause of euthanasia in horses. There are many different types of colic and treatment can range from a single visit from the vet up to emergency surgery. With surgery becoming a more common practice, we offer an optional veteran horse insurance extension that can include a contribution of £1,500 towards emergency life-saving colic surgery, to give your veteran horse the best chance of making a full recovery.
