In this blog, our experienced team of equestrians discuss the importance of specialist Livery Yard Insurance, helping to you protect your business from potential risks and liabilities.
Running a livery yard isn’t just a job or a hobby, for many it’s your way of life, your livelihood and most importantly your passion.
Whether you’re a small private yard at home, or a large equestrian centre, tailored livery yard insurance is essential. It’s not just about meeting your legal and moral obligations, it’s ensuring peace of mind, so you can concentrate on what matters most: managing your yard and supporting the horses and clients who rely on you.
Why The Right Insurance Matters
Accidents can happen despite the best precautions. As a yard owner, you have a duty of care to horses, clients, staff, and visitors. Operating without appropriate cover can leave you vulnerable and the consequences can be financially devastating.
The right insurance policy should reflect the specific services you offer and cover on-site facilities and additional activities such as clinics, events, or hiring out arenas.
What Does The Right Cover Look Like For A Livery Yard?
SEIB’s livery yard insurance is designed to be flexible to the individual requirements of each yard; while ensuring livery yard owners have protection in the areas that matter most.
Typically, cover includes:
- Public Liability – protects livery yard owners against claims of negligence made by third parties. SEIB offers various indemnity limit levels depending on your yard’s needs.
- Employers’ Liability – this includes employed staff, unpaid volunteers, work experience students and even a friend giving a helping hand. This cover is required by law and SEIB provides a standard indemnity limit of up to £10 million.
- Care, Custody and Control – provides cover if a horse is injured or becomes ill whilst in you and your employees care, with indemnity limit options of £10,000, £25,000 or £50,000 per horse, with £100,000 policy aggregate limit.
- Property Insurance – protects the equestrian buildings, contents and stock at your yard, helping you get back on your feet quickly if damage such as a fire or flood occurs. Your home can be included if it’s on the same site as the yard.
- Business Interruption - Protection against loss of income if you cannot carry out business as usual, following an insured property damage loss.
- Tack Trouble - SEIB can provide tack insurance under its range of horse insurance policies, or as the yard owner, your own personal tack can be added onto the yard insurance policy.
